She rolled out from the nursing ward
Caressing our new baby born
She called out her name and I
I stuttered and turned away
Cause I couldn’t hold back
The sudden burst of tears in my eyes
I just choked up
Didn’t know what to say
She looked up to me and gave me her first smile
And I thought to myself
She’ll only be my little baby – for a while
Next thing I know she’s on her tricycle
She got on her birthday
Classic little pink Radio Flyer
Soon we were taking off the training wheels
From her new big bicycle
Man this little girl never tires
I held her down the sidewalk
Pedalling her heart out
Amazed at all I’d learn from this child
I let her coast on her own and I smiled
It’s only for a while
Will she come to know
Father to Daughter
Like a river streaming water to the sea
Nothing lasts forever
But these moments that I treasure
Keep them tucked in living memory
When I get tired and weary
I look deep in these files
I’ll never take for granted, cause I know
It’s only for a while
She stepped up to the microphone
Scared cause she was all alone
The folks out there seemed like for a mile
She strummed those chords I taught her
From daddy and daughter
And to the world, that all too familiar smile
And when her song was over
I screamed and tried to show her
How the auditorium came alive
From three chords that I taught her
From father to daughter
My little lady there in the spotlight
But just like everything in life
It’s only for a while
